Known for picking up women in peculiar ways, Simple Pickup uses their powers for a good cause: The prevention of female circumcision.
While having female volunteers use a Sybian in public, Simple Pickup vowed to donate five dollars for every second a woman sits on the sex toy. With a cumulative effort of 267 seconds, the participants raised $1,335. The Simple Pickup team vowed to donate $100 for every 100,000 views their video receives. Within the eight hours, the video has received almost 300,000 views.
Donating the participant proceeds to The Orchid Project, the team filmed their submission for evidence of the cause.
The Orchid Project aims to end female genital mutilation (FGM) or female genital castration (FGC), which is the partial or complete removal of a girl's external genitals. This process poses no benefit to the patient and has harmful effects to the health and well-being of a woman's lifetime. The UN estimates that over 125 million women and girls worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM. It is reported that this estimation may be inaccurately low due to the taboo within communities to speak about FGM.
The practice of FGC is considered a social norm in some regions of the globe and supporters believe the process is linked to cleanliness, virginity, healthiness, beauty, and morality.
FGM is recognized widely as a violation of human rights.
The Orchid Project hopes to end the practice of FGC through educating communities of the dangers of the practice and changing what is considered to be a social norm in those cultures who accept FGC.
