A slasher/horror gem from the '80s is getting a modern update treatment. With a long list of popular comics by his side, from Uncanny X-Men to the Winter Solider, writer Ed Brubaker will take on the Maniac Cop remake.
According to Spinoff Online, a Maniac Cop remake is already in the works by production powerhouse, Wild Bunch. Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn will be producing the update with the original filmmaker, William Lustig. Having worked in the low-budget horror genre, Lustig already knows what it's like to have his '80s cult classic flicks being remade, especially with the experimental Maniac starring actor Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings trilogy).
Written by Larry Cohen and directed by Lustig, Maniac Cop follows a maniacal murderer stalking New York City cops. The serial killer case escalates when a fellow officer is suspected and a high-ranking lieutenant is found dead. Maniac Cop was followed by two more sequels, both made by Lustig and Cohen themselves.
Brubaker has a script set for the horror remake. Known for his work in Captain America, Brubaker has written comics outside of the superhero genre. Brubaker and artist Sean Philips mix supernatural elements with noir in the Image Comics series, Fatale. Brubaker can be spotted in Captain America: The Winter Solider as one of the Winter Soldier's handlers.
