The CW's Supernatural nearly had a spinoff in the form of Bloodlines, a show that would have focused on the five monster families of Chicago and the new hunter who gets caught in the middle of it. The show got a backdoor pilot in the 20th episode of Season 9 of Supernatural, but the network elected not to order the show to series.

But CW head Mark Pedowitz told reporters at an Upfronts conference call (via E! Online) that another spinoff is in the works.

"We believe there is a real brand in Supernatural," he said. "We had six really good pilots this year and we felt that Supernatural just didn't get there."

Pedowitz said the creative minds would start from scratch again, but no decisions have been made yet about the focus of the show. "What it is and what it isn't yet is still up in the air." So it's unclear if the spinoff would focus on any existing Supernatural characters, but he said talks would begin in June or July.

The move (or lack thereof) to not pick up Bloodlines shows just how poor the critical and fan reception was to the backdoor pilot. A pickup for the spinoff seemed like a lock given the positive chatter surrounding it and the strength of Supernatural on the network, but the episode was apparently enough for the CW to swiftly bring down the axe.

On a more positive note, Supernatural had already received an early pickup for Season 10.
