After just completing the second season of Arrow, executive producer and writer Marc Guggenheim makes his way into the comic book realm. Marvel Comics presents Guggenheim's arrival in X-Men #18, which will send the all-female superhero team into the darkness of outer-space.
As reported here, the new 'X-Men' scribe will be taking over writing duties from Brian Wood in issue #18. What we do know so far, the all-female superhero team will travel into outer space, facing off against Shi'ar Empire's most ferocious warrior, Deathbird. In the Marvel Universe, the villainess possesses talon-tipped wings and is the sister of the Shi'ar empress.
In X-Men #18, Rachel, Storm, Jubilee, Psylocke, and Monet find themselves summoned by S.W.O.R.D., Earth's counterterrorism agency against alien threats. An even deadlier threat has taken down Deathbird and left her bloodied up. Could this be the return of the vicious alien race known as The Brood?
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, the Arrow executive producer explains how longtime X-Men fans and new readers will be able to jump in on his upcoming story arc, "I didn't want to have the entire story be about some continuity that happened five, 10 years ago. I wanted the story to stand on its own feet -- and it does, but the emotional acknowledgement of what happened to her family is a very, very powerful thing." Guggenheim then makes a reference to earlier X-Men story arc, "You don't need to have gone back and read (Days of Future Past) [Chris] Claremont's arc where this happened in order to appreciate my story. It's just another layer of emotion."
Though no artist has been announced yet, the X-Men writer states how long he will staying with mutant superhero group, "I've signed on for a four-issue arc. My hope is to be doing more comic book work. I've heard through the grapevine that there are various gigs I've missed out on because people think I'm too busy. I hope this run will disabuse people of that notion -- I love doing comics, and I can always find time for it, because it's just so much fun."
Expect X-Men #18 to hit stores sometime in August. Readers, do you think Arrow's executive producer Marc Guggenheim will do a great job with the X-Men superheroes?
