Swiss artist H. R. Giger gave viewers terrifying and wonderfully realized nightmares with his creature design works in the sci-fi classic, Alien. In honor of Giger's passing, let's take a look the frightening extraterrestrial being through its developmental stages of life.

What is it the "facehugger" that gave you nightmares? The simple idea of something foreign invading your body orally just makes you want to shut your mouth. John Hurt's Kane was in a comatose state of sleep when the facehugger implanted its eggs into his system. In his deep sleep, Kane had no idea his body was the host of something deadly.

Don't tell me you didn't jump when you saw the "chestburster" scene. It's a quiet dinner scene, the calm before the storm. While everyone has gathered for lunch, Kane is joking around, even laughing with the space crew, when he feels something horrible in his chest. A living penis-shaped creature is trying to punch out of Kane's chest.

Pregnant with a monster inside, Kane actually gives birth, with blood splattering the air, to the chestburster. The most memorable scene in the movie was spoofed later on in Mel Brooks' sci-fi comedy Spaceballs. This time, the chestburster sings and dance to Tin Pan Alley's "Hello! Ma Baby!"

What starts out so small, the chestburster, becomes a giant-sized living and breathing Alien. With its elongated head, the Alien opens its first mouth to reveal a second mouth. Filled with fright, Sigourney Weaver's Ripley has to look away as the second mouth snaps its sharp teeth at her neck.

The Alien is the most iconic movie monster in film history. It's an unstoppable killing machine that shows no mercy. The extraterrestrial creature doesn't have vocal chords, so you don't know what it wants. The hideous thing doesn't even have eyes, yet the monstrous entity can sense exactly where you are. You can't hide or beg for your life from the Alien; you can only run and hope it doesn't catch you.

In memory of Alien artist and designer H.R. Giger, we have seen a terrifying and well-crafted vision of nightmares. Giger's legacy will continue  because his work in Alien has made its stamp in film history.
