Supernatural Stars Preview Season 9 Finale's Twists, Cliffhangers

Supernatural will air its Season 9 finale Tuesday night on the CW at 9 p.m. Eastern. Last week, Dean (Jensen Ackles) was all hopped up on aggression from the First Blade and sliced Gadreel's chest open with one swing of the weapon. The side effects of the blade have been affecting him for a while, but now the situation is dire, which will force Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Castiel (Misha Collins) to act.

"Sam and Cas are going to have to team up because Dean has powers that are heretofore unknown, so they're surprising both Sam and Cas," Padalecki told TVLine. "We have to go to a pretty big extreme to take care of what's going on with Dean."

Cas, meanwhile, is dealing with the stolen grace inside him that is essentially acting as a ticking clock. As a result, he "may go to great lengths" to save himself, according to Collins. "I'm interested to see what the writers do with Cas' fading grace n Season 10," he said, which indicates this storyline will continue into next year, when Collins is a series regular.

Sam and Dean have been in conflict for much of Season 9, but Padalecki said the finale contains "a lot of what makes Sam and Dean Sam and Dean and a lot of that brotherly love that the show is based on. You see a lot of it in the finale, in a weird way. So hopefully, next season, we bounce off of that."

The actor also revealed the season ender overwhelmed him emotionally at times. "Parts of it made me laugh, parts of it brought me to tears and parts of it really gave me that feeling where I was excited to see what happens next," he said.

Finally, Padalecki said Supernatural fans are in for a long summer break, as Tuesday's episode ends with a "huge" cliffhanger that changes the show's landscape "big time."

Collins took it a step further. "More than any other season before, this season finale has implications for Season 10." He described the ending as "chilling." "It may be the best last 10 seconds of a season that we've had in five years."
