According to new reports, one of the Star Wars standalone spinoff films from Disney and Lucasfilm has found a director in Godzilla filmmaker Gareth Edwards. Thanks to the overwhelming success of the 2014 monster movie reboot, Edwards was an easy choice for the franchise project, which will premiere after J.J. Abrams' Episode VII.
Though he already has a sequel to his 2014 blockbuster on the way, Edwards may have to put that on the back burner to focus on his new gig: directing one of the three spinoff movies from the Star Wars universe.
"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited & honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm," Edwards said in a statement released this week, confirming the news.
"Gareth's filmmaking talent makes him one of his generation's most creative and visionary directors," Legendary Entertainment's chairman and CEO Thomas Tull (also a Godzilla producer) said in a statement. "The plan has always been for Gareth to direct a different film before we started on another Godzilla, but who knew it would a Star Wars installment? We have a great plan in store for Godzilla fans and I am looking forward to seeing Gareth's imprint on the Star Wars universe."
As far as which spinoff he'd be taking on, odds are it would be the Boba Fett standalone film since it is scheduled for release after 2015's Star Wars: Episode VII. Though we won't know for sure until the announcement is made!
