After Manchester United's horrible season, their new boss Louis Van Gaal is facing a summer of change at his new club. With Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving the club, they looked set to make it a trio of veteran defenders leaving with left back Patrice Evra. However, they've secured a one-year extension, easing some of their worries. With other positions of real need, they had been looking at Bayern Munich's Toni Kroos, but have they given up on the star?
The French left back, Patrice Evra, is now 33, but United couldn't afford to lose his experience and leadership, so this deal makes sense. It looked evident that he'd be leaving soon, but rumours started to surface that he was having a hard time leaving, and wanted to stay. The star defender made 45 appearances for United in the 2013/14 season, although his side had a stuttering season.
Evra cost United around $10 million dollars in 2006, and in his United career he has won five Premier League titles, three League Cups and the Champions League. This experience will be vital with a much younger team expected to surround Evra next season.
United had been close to agreeing a deal with Toni Kroos, but reports suggest neither the club nor player are interested in the move any more, so who will United pursue instead? Could they still bring Luke Shaw in to compete with Evra, and could Cesc Fabregas be United's choice over Kroos?
It's going to be a long summer of ins and outs at Old Trafford.
