Google this week premiered a special video showcasing volunteers trying out its new Googlecar: a self-driving automobile. Though this is just in a prototype phase, it looks like Google could be close to actually making this vehicle work!
"Fully autonomous driving has always been the goal of our project, because we think this could improve road safety and help lots of people who can't drive," a statement released with this video gushes. "We're now developing prototypes of vehicles that have been designed from the ground up to drive themselves-just push a button and they'll take you where you want to go! We'll use these vehicles to test our software and learn what it will really take to bring this technology into the world."

According to Google's official blog post on the Googlecar: "We're planning to build about a hundred prototype vehicles, and later this summer, our safety drivers will start testing early versions of these vehicles that have manual controls. If all goes well, we'd like to run a small pilot program here in California in the next couple of years. We're going to learn a lot from this experience, and if the technology develops as we hope, we'll work with partners to bring this technology into the world safely."
