Oprah says that "growing up reading was my passion, and that books were my escape" as she talked about loving Maya Angelou books.
The TV host was very close to Angelou, who passed away Wednesday morning peacefully in Winston-Salem, NC. In this video, Oprah shares interesting facts about her own life, and how she related to Dr. Angelou. She reflected on one book that she had read numerous of times before her adult years, called "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings," comparing her upbringing to Maya Angelou.
Oprah recited one of the sentences in the book, "and whatcha lookin' at me for? Didn't come to stay. Only came to say happy Easter day." She said that page, "Struck me because I was a black girl just like Maya Angelou growing up in the church being raised by my grandmother, doing Easter pieces. Oprah continues and says, "She is one of the greatest influences in my entire life...." Find out why.
