The beloved 90s video game and cartoon character Sonic the Hedgehog will soon get the movie treatment, as Sony Pictures announced it would bring the blue creature to life on the big screen.
Sony and Neal H. Moritz, the producer of the Fast and the Furious franchise, will team up CG-animation production company Marza Animation Planet and a division of the Sega Sammy Group. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux will write the script, which will follow Sonic and his friends. The movie will likely also feature his archenemy, Dr. Robotnik aka Dr. Eggman.
"There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog and a built-in international fan base, along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we're looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before," said Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we're thrilled that he's now coming to the big screen," said Marza CEO Masanao Maeda. "Sony Pictures has had great success with hybrid animated and live-action features, and we're confident that this collaboration will bring a fresh take to Sonic, while still capturing everything that the fans love about him."
