After seeing Germany thrash Portugal, both USA and Ghana know they had a chance of getting through to the next stage of the 2014 World Cup, if they were to win their match against one another. USA had been rapidly improving, but Ghana had already built an impressive footballing reputation. Which would trump the other, the new or the old? Ghana battled hard throughout, and possibly could've snatched a draw with a late goal, but USA bounced back to grab the all important 2-1 victory.
The United States were heavily criticized for leaving behind their veteran player in Landon Donovan. Many were wondering if the US would live to regret leaving him behind, but they seemed fine without him. Fellow veteran, Clint Dempsey, proved that he could step up as he netted the opener. The United States then sat back and looked to see the game out, and they almost did until Ghana tied the game with less than ten minutes left.
It seemed like Ghana could go on to win, but with minutes remaining a powerful US header ensured they would run out the 2-1 winners. Many labelled it as one of the best games of the tournament, considering they both tried to attack and win the game, with no real defensive measures in place
Can the US go far at the 2014 World Cup? Can Ghana bounce back? It looks like both USA and Germany could seal their future in the next game, meaning their final game against one another might be a clash purely about who wins the group and who finishes second.
