The question of whether mermaids exists or not have come up to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ever since the documentary aired.
As a result, the NOAA published a statement early July explaining that no evidence has been found that the mythical "half-human, half-fish sirens of the sea" have ever existed.
In pop culture, mermaids do exist. Many superstars have donned mermaid suits and have references the creatures in their lyrics.
Lady Gaga turned into a mermaid in her "You and I" music video released in 2011. She also infamously wore her mermaid suit in a wheelchair that stirred controversy.
Beyonce believes that she is a mermaid or that she may have been a mermaid in another life.
Pop princess Katy Perry transformed to a mystical mermaid for David LaChapelle 's hairdryer line.
Even Bette Midler has lived some time as a mermaid named Doores DeLago long before Lady Gaga and other pop stars were born.
