Producer Kevin Feige has been sending audience into space with his blockbuster Marvel films, Thor: The Dark World and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy. Now Feige will take audiences to the dark side Marvel Universe with Doctor Strange.
In an interview with Total Film, the Guardians of the Galaxy producer reveals what's ahead for the Marvel movies. In the Marvel Universe, Doctor Strange isn't some superhuman hero who fights crime in New York City, nor is he a super-solder from World War II. Strange is a sorcerer who combats monsters, demons, and the Devil himself, known as Mephisto.
Feige explains how Marvel franchise is slowly moving away from cosmic adventures and entering a new phase, "We've now done the cosmic side with Thor and Avengers and most obviously with Guardians, but there's a whole other side of the Marvel comics, which is that supernatural side - the inter-dimensional side of the Marvel universe, and Doctor Strange is, I believe, our entry point into that other realm, which has dozens of characters and storylines all of its own."
Strange usually guest-stars in the Ghost Rider, Blade, and the Darkhold Redeemers series. The Doctor Strange movie would help introduce Morbius, the Living Vampire, and Nightmare, the evil ruler of the Dream Dimension to mainstream audiences.
Feige explains the timetable for Strange, "So we're about to hire a writer to redo a draft, and we think we'll be casting probably in the next month or two, and announcing an actor, and then we get into production in the spring of next year."
As reported here, Jared Leto, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Tom Hardy are in the running for the lead role. We also mentioned screenwriter Jon Spaihts has been hired to pen the script.
Kevin Feige's next movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, is heading into theaters on August 1. Readers, who do you think will be announced as the Sorcerer Supreme?
