Legendary newswoman Diane Sawyer is reportedly stepping down from her position as the anchor of ABC's evening news. She will be replaced by David Muir, and George Stephanopoulos will take over as the chief anchor for live events, as Fox News reports.
While the 68-year-old is leaving her anchor spot, word has it that she'll still be reporting on interviews and various network specials. Sawyer has been with the network for quite some time, and has kept the network's World News second to the NBC Nightly News hosted by Brian Williams.
On the subject of Sawyer's departure, the network news president James Goldston has stated, "For many years to come Diane will be a driving force at ABC News with her exceptional storytelling genius. She will create innovative television specials and events, and, of course, continue to conduct the biggest interviews with the most import and extraordinary people in the world."
Goldston went on to discuss Stephanopoulus' new role, "In this position, George will be our lead anchor for major special events and breaking news at ABC, driving our live network coverage for the biggest stories," he said. "The news division could not be in stronger hands with George in his new role."
Muir will take to the anchor spot rather swimmingly, having substituted for Sawyer in the past. The first ABC World News with David Muir will air September 2.
And luckily, it seems Sawyer is happy for the pair. She tweeted out the below earlier this morning:
Congrats to my friends @DavidMuir & @GStephanopoulos – big days and stories ahead for all at @ABC !
