For the past few months it'd been common knowledge that. Manchester United needed a big summer of transfers, and that spend salary-breaking figures. Although new manager Louis Van Gaal's currently coaching Netherlands at the World Cup it seems he's currently preparing for his first Premier League season. He's started his summer transfer spending spree by signing Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and Southampton's Luke Shaw.
It's believed each transaction will cost the club around $50 million, but for a club with an elite backing and currently on the edge of falling from grace, it's a fee well worth paying. Van Gaal has still got World Cup preparation ahead of him, and this duo were targeted long before his arrival, so many are wondering what deals he will complete when he arrives at Old Trafford.
A club of United's stature sometimes spend less than $100 million per summer, so some are wondering how Herrera and Shaw's transfer fees and salaries will impact the club's other transfers this summer. With clubs knowing they're in need, and that United are prepared to spend $50 million per target, it's very likely that could be the price for each significant player they want to add to United's squad.
With no UEFA Champions League football for the coming season it might be hard to attract further talent, or to even afford it. Regardless it seems United are prepared to spend their way back in to EPL contention. Will these signings make a difference, or will they be for the future?
