Argentina are so desperate to win the 2014 World Cup, with one reason being its location. With the World Cup held in Brazil, they are hoping to rub it in the noses of the Brazil fans, who have been in attendance of every World Cup match. First they had to win their World Cup Round of 16 clash, with Switzerland in their way. Despite an edgy game, going back and forth, Lionel Messi assisted Angel Di Maria in the last few minutes of extra-time, ensuring that they will face the winner of USA Vs Belgium.
Although Messi has the right to stake his claim for being the greatest soccer player of all-time, many believe a World Cup win would cement his place as the No. 1 with no possible questions surrounding the verdict. He's doing his best to ensure that happens. After a stunning group phase, in which he almost single-handedly carried Argentina, he delivered the game-changing assist in the last few minutes of extra-time.
The game had finished 0-0 and neither team were able to grab the needed goal, until Messi drove at the Swiss defense and put Di Maria through on goal, who despite a poor game, netted the most important goal of his career. Di Maria had suffered through a game of mistakes and mishaps, where he lost the ball with almost every touch, however, Messi's genius style of play allowed the defender to drift off from him, meaning he had a good chance to rewrite his poor performance.
Next up they will face either USA or Belgium, and both teams are likely to put up a bigger fight than Switzerland managed. Considering Argentina got lucky, could their time be coming to its end, or will they lift the 2014 World Cup?
