Robert Downey Jr Rallies Behind Son

The actor has spoken about his past substance abuse on multiple occasions and even joked about it in interviews, but Robert never could have expected his son's life to take a similar turn.

Indio, 20, who was arrested for cocaine possession on June 29. Indio checked himself into rehab shortly following his arrest.

A source for People Magazine told readers, "Robert clearly understands the struggle, and while of course this relapse was very upsetting to him, he is very proud of his son."

The source, who reportedly is a close family friend, added, "Indio truly wants to stay clean... And no matter what, his dad will be right there with him."

In a public address, the Iron Man actor said, "We're grateful to the Sheriff's department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."

"Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it," Downey Jr.'s statement continued. "Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being."

The Hollywood star understood how tragic addiction can bring any person down.  "It's like I have a shotgun in my mouth, and I've got my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal," he famously told a judge back in 1999.
