Tommy Ramone, the last original member of the seminal New York punk band, The Ramones has died at age 62.
Tommy died Friday, June 11 at his home in Ridgewood Queens. He was undergoing treatment for bile duct cancer and had spent some time in hospice, according to Variety.
Born Erdelyi Tamas in Budapest, Hungary and known professionally as Tom or T. Erdelyi, Ramone was a drummer and producer who played on and co-produced the band's groundbreaking first three albums Ramones (1976), Leave Home (1977) and Rocket to Russia (1977). He also appeared on and co-produced The Ramones 1979 live LP, It's Alive.
By the early '80s, Ramone stepped out of the spotlight and into the studio. He produced The Replacements classic Tim (1985) and Redd Kross' Neurotica (1987) among others.
The Ramones started in 1974. Original members Jeffrey Hyman (Joey Ramone), bassist Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone) and John William Cummings (Johnny Ramone) wrote and played short, aggressive songs that were (and still are) hugely influential on punk in the U.S. and in Europe.
Among the Ramones best-known songs were "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Teenage Lobotomy," "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker," "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "Beat on The Brat."
Tommy was preceded in death by Joey (2001), Dee Dee (2002) and Johnny (2004).
The band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002.
Tommy Ramone is survived by his partner of 40 years Claudia Tienan, his older brother Peter; sister-in-law Andrea Tienan; and nephews Eric and David.
