The New York Times reports Broadway icon and five-time Tony nominee Elaine Stritch has died at 89 at her home in Birmingham, Michigan. She had been battling diabetes, but the cause of her death is not yet known.

Stritch made some film appearances in her career, in Woody Allen's September (1987) and in Small Time Crooks (2000). She also made her mark in television, appearing in Law & Order (for which she won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama in 1993) and on NBC comedy 30 Rock in a reoccurring role as Colleen Donaghy, the domineering mother of the television executive played by Alec Baldwin (for which she won another Emmy in 2007).

She made her professional stage debut in 1944 and some her theater highlights include roles in the original production of William Inge's Bus Stop (1955), Noël Coward's Sail Away (1961) and Stephen Sondheim's Company (1970).

Stritch was known as leading interpreter of Sondheim and his song, "I'm Still Here" became somewhat of an anthem for her. The Times says of her work on Company: "One of Ms. Stritch's most memorable appearances was in the Sondheim musical Company, in which, as a cynical society woman, she saluted her peers with the vodka-soaked anthem "The Ladies Who Lunch." It not only brought her another Tony nomination but became her signature tune - at least until, in her 70s, she became equally known for Sondheim's paean to showbiz longevity and survival, "I'm Still Here." It was the centerpiece of her 2001 one-woman show, Elaine Stritch at Liberty, and she sang it in 2010 at Mr. Sondheim's 80th-birthday concert at Lincoln Center (Patti LuPone took on "The Ladies Who Lunch") and at the White House for President Obama."

RIP Elaine Stritch.
