Sony seemingly had major plans for its Amazing Spider-Man franchise around the release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The studio announced a third installment for 2016 and a fourth movie for 2018, along with Venom and Sinister Six spinoff films to create a shared film universe.

But The Amazing Spider-Man 2 received a lukewarm reception from critics and earned approximately $300 million less than the studio expected. Could this actually mean that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 does not happen?

"It's still in conversation," Alex Kurtzman told Collider. "Everybody is still figuring it out. It's all up for grabs right now. We're just trying to figure it out."

Those words don't exactly inspire much confidence, especially because the four future movies seemed like a sure thing only a few months ago. Now, Kurtzman gives the indication that the situation is more in flux than we had thought.

Kurtzman also revealed that the plan for Venom is to have it come out after Sinister Six, and he said he is still tied to the project as director. The site asked him about a possible Black Cat movie, and he seemed open to the idea.

"Anything is possible," he said. "We are always looking for opportunities like that. I can't say a whole lot about it, but I wouldn't rule anything out."

To further complicate matters, Kurtzman offered a noncommittal response about a connection between Sinister Six and Venom. "Everything is still on the table, right now," he said. "Because it's a universe outside of the Spider-Man universe, even though it's connected to it, those movies have to stand on their own. So, we'll see. We'll see how it goes."

This seems like bad news for fans of the franchise, but what do you think will happen? Will Sony scrap its plans, or even reboot the franchise again? Would they bring in new writers and directors? Let us know in the comments below.
