Episode four left The Leftovers viewers in an even deeper hole than the previous two. We saw how Reverend Matt Jamison was willing to do just about anything to save his church, but that the God he desperately holds onto won't let him have one miracle. With the Guilty Remnant taking over the church - quite literally - we see what Mapleton endures in the cult's next step. (SPOILERS to follow)

We saw how Mapleton's baby Jesus was made and put on display in one of the weirdest opening scenes of the season, but a mystery develops right before the opening credits: who took the doll out of the nativity scene?

Chief Garvey makes a plea for "a break" from the Guilty Remnant during the holidays, but we all figure that that's him wasting his breath - which is pretty ironic. The missing baby Jesus case doesn't seem to bother Kevin too much, but Mayor Warburton makes it a priority. After offering him "a win" - kind of an out for the situation - by telling him to replace the baby. Heading his daughter's advice from earlier, he reconsiders and decides to look for the missing doll.

As he begins his search, his car mysteriously shuts off.

Meanwhile, Tom Garvey is still waiting for Holy Wayne to call the happy face cell phone. An incident in a hospital makes Tom turn a bit cold toward Christine. As they check on the fetus, the wounds on his hands from defending Christine, plus her own bumps and bruises, lead to doctor's getting a bit suspicious of Tom. He makes a run for it and almost goes home. After begging his phone to ring, it does, but it isn't Wayne.

This is enough for Tom to remain with Christine. Their journey gets super weirder, too.

Well Jill took the doll. After almost setting it on fire in a Viking funeral, she has a change of heart. The twins eventually get it to Kevin

Laurie and Megan meet Kevin at his house and deliver a letter from a wife to a husband. We learn that Tom is not Kevin's son, which isn't as interesting as the real reason why Laurie visited Kevin. She wants a divorce.

Kevin runs into Nora Durst at the holiday party and then reveals that he cheated on Laurie. This also marks a huge move from the Guilty Remnant. While some are arrested at the holiday party at the school, others are in houses removing photos of those that had departed in the event.

Kevin throws the baby Jesus doll out of his car at the end of the episode.

Considering the previous episode focused mainly on Matt Jamison, we had plenty to catch up on this week. It didn't feel too cluttered, though. The underlying theme of the holidays held it together, but (as usual) we have so many more questions as the credits roll.
