Manchester United have recent lost Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, so it was evident that the club would be in major need of defensive reinforcements. Although the trio weren't at their best, they'll be tough acts to follow. However, it seems Manchester United believe that Luke Shaw, who they've already completed the transfer of, Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels, Daley Blind and Stefan De Vrij could be the making of their new back-four. With Hummels close to signing, United will swoop for the Dutch duo soon after.
Hummels, regarded as one of the world's best defenders by many, had been watched by Barcelona, but it appears the Germany star wants to move to Old Trafford. He would cost around $30 million, and reports suggest a deal may already be near completion. He would be an instant upgrade to United's back-four, and his addition would certainly attract other targets, convincing them to sign on the dotted line.
United will not stop there. Shaw and Hummels may be a good start, but it seems like they want to bring in Dutch duo Blind and De Vrij. All in all United would have a young, yet experienced back-line, and one that could see them become a major threat both domestically and in Europe. Can the Red Devils land all three of these defenders?
It seems like United will focus on sorting their depleted defense before other positions, but they're not prepared to fix their problematic roster on the cheap. Who will they land next?
