Robert Downey Jr.'s latest deal with Marvel Studios was for two pictures, The Avengers: Age of Ultron and the inevitable The Avengers 3. But with no mention of an Iron Man 4 in this deal, many fans wondered if the franchise had come to an end with the third installment.
But Iron Man 3 made $1.2 billion at the box office and Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige pushed for a fourth movie. But will Downey be involved?
Entertainment Weekly asked the actor about this issue on the set of The Avengers 2 and he spoke optimistically about it. "It's down to Kevin and Ike [Perlmutter, CEO of Marvel Entertainment] and Disney to come to us with what the proposal is, and that's on us to agree or disagree," he said. "When things are going great, there's a lot of agreement."
Downey elaborated in a way that indicated he feels a degree of ownership of the part, an understandable position after excelling in it for so long. "It's that thing of: why give up the belt when it feels like you can barely get jabbed?" he said. "Most people are saying that right when they get knocked out."
Of course, he ended on a note of ambiguity. "The future is, as usual, uncertain."
What do you think, Marvel fans? Will Robert Downey Jr. be a part of Iron Man 4? Should he pass on the role to someone else, or should he continue in the part that he has owned for more than half a decade? Let us know in the comments below.
