Officials now confirm that missing Air Algerie flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers has crashed in Mali, and the wreckage has been located by two French fighter jets Thursday, according to Fox News.
"I can confirm that it has crashed," the Algerian aviation official confirmed. The reason for the accident and exact location has not yet been released. The aircraft AH 5017 carrying 116 people lost contact an hour after takeoff according to Reuters.
The plane belonged to a private Spanish company, Swiftair, who announced that the plane dropped off radar, "We have lost contact with the plane," Swiftair said. "At this moment, emergency services and our staff are working on finding out more on this situation."
Air Algerie official Twitter account tweeted, "Unfortunately, for the moment we have no more information than you do. We will give you the latest news live."
The tragedy comes a week after Malaysian flight MH17 carrying 295 people crashed in Ukraine after being shot down by a missile shot from a from a Buk launcher July 17.
According to the Associated Press, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that the plane was not shot by his armed forces
"We do not exclude that this plane was shot down, and we stress that the Armed Forces of Ukraine did not take action against any airborne targets," he said. "We are sure that those who are guilty in this tragedy will be held responsible."
The MH17 was traveling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpor before losing contact. Malaysian Airlines tweeted, "has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace."
