Frank Lampard has been there, done that, and done it all over again. He was a key player for both West Ham and then Chelsea, all whilst being a regular for his country, England, but his Premier League career has come to its ends, and his England (international) future may soon follow in a similar fashion. Today Lampard was officially unveiled as a New York City FC player, meaning the new MLS franchise have secured a big-name signing to showcase their intention to win instantly. Is this a good deal for all involved?
Fresh off the 2014 World Cup Lampard packed his things and left behind the EPL, with Chelsea no longer wanting him, and NYC desperate to land his services. The star has agreed to a two-year deal, and the 36-year-old will be a role model for both on and off the field, with the club hoping to become an MLS great as quickly as possible.
Lampard scored 211 goals in 649 games for Chelsea, and with the MLS sometimes an easier league, perhaps he will score at a similar ratio for his new club. When discussing his new move, he explained "New York ticks all the right boxes for me. It's very exciting. Chelsea will always have a huge place in my heart, but it's now a new challenge. I had a fantastic 13 years there and can look back at that with pride, but it was a great time for me and Chelsea to move on. Having seen the vision of this club, I have seen a real long-term plan and I want to be involved and I want to keep on challenging myself."
Lampard must wait to 2015 to make his MLS debut, with NYC beginning their first campaign next season. The England midfielder has also hinted his international decision will be made soon, with many believing he will retire. What's next for NYC?
