Announced at San Diego Diego Comic-Con, IDW Publishing has partnered with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products for the Edward Scissorhands series. The Tim Burton classic will get the comic book treatment by writer Kate Leth (Adventure Time) and artists Drew Rausch (Haunted Mansion) and Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key).
In the romantic/dark fantasy flick, Edward (played by Johnny Depp), the unfinished creation of The Inventor, lives alone in a haunted mansion until he is found by a suburban family mom. Because he has scissors for hands, Edward cannot touch the teenage cheerleader Kim (Winona Ryder). The film ends with Edward returning to the abandoned castle in fear of an angry mob, but keeping Kim forever in his heart.
The comic continues where the film left off. Kim's granddaughter, Meg, remembers the bedtime stories she was told as a little girl. When strange things start happening in her sleepy town, Meg wonders if her grandmother's tales were actually true. The search for answers leads to our heroine searching for Edward's whereabouts.
Leth describes venturing into Burton's pastel and Gothic world, "We're taking the story forward in time and telling a bit of a girl detective story-one of my favorite genres-a bit closer to modern times but still with that eerie, anachronistic touch." The Adventure Time scribe continues, "It's a bit creepy, a bit scary, but always full of wonder."
IDW also made another announcement at Comic-Con with the Star Trek/Planet of the Apes crossover event. Readers, which of the two comics will you pick up?
