After announcing his plan to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James also shocked fans when he made it known that he would also return to wearing No. 23 next season.
James made the switch from No. 23 to No. 6 when he joined the Miami Heat back in 2010, but the number has been famous for more than a decade before James even entered the league, of course because it first belonged to NBA royalty Michael Jordan.
With news of the change circulating on numerous online publications, ESPN reports that Jordan, the player most famous for wearing No. 23, wasn't concerned that another basketball player would be rocking his jersey on the NBA court.
"I'm cool with it,'' Jordan said in a text message to ESPN.com. "I don't own a number.''
Since announcing the change James has yet to reach out to Jordan, but during his last season with the Cavaliers in 2009 he had this to say:
"I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon,'' James gushed about his idol. "There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn't Michael Jordan first.
"He can't get the logo, and if he can't, something has to be done. I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.''
James officially made the announcement on his twitter page about the number change, saying:
"23 is it!" the King tweeted. "It's only right I go back!"
