During Keith Urban's recent concert at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts, 18-year-old Sean Murphy reportedly raped a 17-year-old fan of the Australian country singer. Those near Murphy and the victim gathered around and videotaped the assault, assuming it was consensual and fueled by alcohol. Murphy is now charged with rape after being arrested shortly after the incident.
According to CNN, the rape stopped when a woman pushed Murphy off of the victim, at which point he fled the scene. Police officers found him and arrested him "a short time later."
"Officers conducting the investigation were assisted by patrons that had been concerned and took photos and video of the assault on their cellular phones. Those phones are being processed to recover the digital evidence of the assault," a statement from the Mansfield Police Department said.
Sean Murphy pled not guilty to the rape charge and was released on a $10,000 bond. He and his lawyer are claiming the sex was consensual.
"Put simply, this was a consensual act, not a sexual assault. There are no allegations of force or violence against him. This was a private act that regrettably occurred in a public place. Mr. Murphy deeply regrets this incident and I am sure the young woman does as well," the lawyer said. "The young woman was neither intoxicated nor overcome by drugs at the time. Mr. Murphy has no criminal history whatsoever."
Besides this terrible story, the Mansfield concert also resulted in over 20 people being hospitalized for alcohol-related issues. Read more on this here!
