In a surprising visit, Derek Jeter received a presidential sendoff from the former George W. Bush in Texas. During his retirement campaign, the New York Yankees captain was vetted by the ex-U.S. president in a celebrated pre-game ceremony.
The star baseball player is making his final stops at different ballparks before his last game. In the pre-game festivities, the sports star usually knows what to expect, but not this time. During the New York Yankees vs the Texas Rangers game, the baseball shortstop was not expecting a visit from the 43rd President of the United States.
The sports athlete and Republican politician have a history together that many might not remember. During his presidency, the former managing partner of the Rangers had to throw the first pitch of Game 3 during the 2001 World Series. This was a daunting task because this event took place seven weeks after the 9/11 attacks.
Jeter was there, giving the war president much-need advice to take him out of the moment, "Don't bounce it. They'll boo you."
From Fox Sports, check out Bush's farewell to Jeter:
The five-time World Series champion tells MLB.com about the surprise visit, ""I had heard he was coming to the stadium, but I didn't know he was going on the field. That's a pretty special feeling, when you have a President come out and give you something to honor you. Jeter adds, "That's definitely a memory I'll have for a long time."
Bush was introduced the sports star and presented him with a framed photo of the duo from that particular night, and a gift from the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum in Dallas.
As reported here, Jeter also received a star-studded farewell video starring Spike Lee, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Jordan, and more.
