Leonard Belzer, the brother of stand-up comedian Richard Belzer, jumped from the roof of his apartment building to his death. The older sibling of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit actor left suicide notes for others to find before taking his own.
The 73 year old had been married to award-winning Sesame Street director Emily Squires. According to an Amazon blurb, Squires and the Columbia University graduate cowrote Spiritual Places In and Around New York City, which finds locations that help "maintain their own personal sanity amid the frenetic pace of the city." Their marriage had lasted until the spouse passed away in November 2012.
Apparently, the Upper West Side resident was distraught over the loss of his significant other. Law Enforcement sources claim there were multiple suicide notes found in the apartment room. Police authorities have not released what was actually said in the notes, nor whom they were addressed too.
Terry Caza mentions to the New York Post how she noticed her neighbor's gradual decline in mood and health, ""After his wife died, he was never quite the same. He never quite recovered," Garza continues, "He was still friendly after she passed, but he just seemed more subdued."
A spokesperson for the Homicide: Life On The Street actor tells the Daily News, "It is with deep sadness that news reports of the passing of Richard Belzer's brother, Len, have been confirmed." The representative then adds, "Richard is in seclusion at his home in France and cannot be reached for comment at this time."
The Belzer brothers have a long history of violence and attempted suicides in their family. Their salesman father also killed himself back in 1968. In an interview with People magazine in 1993, Belzer recounts how his mother used to beat them.
The late Leonard Belzer, bother of Richard Belzer, committed suicide. We wish the Law & Order well during his time of loss and mourning.
