Critical and financial reception for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier this year was lukewarm, but it appears Sony is pushing full steam ahead with its plan to expand the franchise to spinoffs and sequels, including a female Spidey film.
The studio pushed The Amazing Spider-Man 3 from 2016 to 2018, and Deadline reports Sony is revamping the franchise, a move that includes a female superhero movie in 2017. The site does not have specifics on which female character would be the focus of the movie, but it speculates on Black Cat, Spider-Woman, Silver Sable, Firestar and Stunner. Black Cat would likely make the most sense, as Felicity Jones played Felicia Hardy in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Deadline mentions all the way toward the bottom of its article that the upcoming Venom spinoff will be titled Venom Carnage with Alex Kurtzman and Ed Solomon writing the script. Kurtzman will direct the movie, which might also come out in 2017.
The franchise has been in turmoil since The Amazing Spider-Man 2's release, but writer/director Drew Goddard will take the reins for the Sinister Six spinoff on Nov. 11, 2016. Deadline notes Goddard's adoration for comics and his innate understanding of the Spider-Man characters, which should help lift the franchise.
"Having Goddard on board places the movie in the hands of someone who has lived in this world," a source with knowledge of the property told Deadline. "If you look at Cabin In The Woods, he did such a phenomenal job on that in redefining and commenting on the genre while also completely embracing it. He's a fanboy which compliments his talents as a filmmaker."
