According to Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, a 5th season of Mitch Hurwitz's Arrested Development is on its way - but we definitely don't have a confirmed release date. Netflix is ready for new episodes, but it's really up to the cast and crew as to when it will actually come together.
"It's just a matter of when," Sarandos told USA Today, explaining that the cast is very busy with their respective careers and that getting them together to film new episodes isn't exactly easy. After all, it took 7 years to get season 4 filmed and released! It looks like we might have to wait a similar amount of time for season 5.
Season 4 criticisms definitely got back to Sarandos and the Netflix team, but he understood why fans were so hard on these online exclusive new episodes. Specifically, he said, "that the cast didn't appear on screen often enough together," was "fair criticism."
So it looks like Arrested Development is definitely coming back to Netflix, but there's no way of confirming an official date just yet. Hopefully it doesn't take 7 years like it did with season 4, but that could easily be the case.
But everyone is on board. Star Jason Bateman explained earlier this year that Hurwitz is definitely trying to make season 5.
"Mitch Hurwitz and [Netflix's] Ted Sarandos would be the two who would really be driving that agenda," he told Zap2it in January. "My ears are wide open if they ever want to talk to me about it."
