Guardians of the Galaxy has not been in theaters for two weeks yet, but eyes are already turning ahead to Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in 2017. One of the biggest dangling mysteries at the end of the latest Marvel movie is the identity of Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) father.
Director James Gunn recently spoke to Empire and said he intentionally left this thread loose for a sequel. "There have been a lot of documents passed around about who Peter Quill's father is between a select two or three of us," he said. "That's been part of the plan since the beginning, that's something I had to work out before we shot the screenplay. We wanted to make sure Yondu's place in everything made sense and it does, so it's all very specific stuff."
The site then asked if J'son, aka Json of Spartax, Peter Quill's father in the comics, is a possibility. "It's definitely not the character who is in the comics. I'll say that much," Gunn offered.
As for the villain of the sequel, the mad titan Thanos is an oft-discussed option. Josh Brolin portrayed the character in Guardians of the Galaxy, and many fans believe he would appear in the sequel to set up his role in The Avengers 3. But Gunn hedged a bit on that plan.
"He will show up if he helps our story and he will not show up at all if not," he said."Thanos is not the most important thing in Guardians 2, that's for damn sure. There's the Guardians themselves and other threats the Guardians are going to be facing that are not Thanos...I think Thanos has been lonely for a long time. He can handle it. He's used to his loneliness. He's got some other kids out there. He's got to look after them. Nebula's probably the sweetest of them, which tells you what his kids are like..."
