The Season 1 finale of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. featured a touching moment between Fitz (Iain de Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) when they were trapped underwater in a pod with little hope of escape. Fitz devised a plan to get them out, but it would likely cost him his life.
He then confessed his feelings to his co-worker and friend, who began to cry and interestingly planted a few kisses on him everywhere but his lips. Regardless, Fitz saved the day and somehow survived. When the team got him to safety, he disappeared from the screen and the last fans heard was Fitz might be different when he wakes up.
So what does this mean for "FitzSimmons" both in terms of his health and a possible romance between the two? The "Ask Ausiello" column at TVLine spoke to executive producer Jeffrey Bell, who said fans should be ready for some complications.
"Prepare to be mildly toyed with. Exec producer Jeff Bell told Matt Mitovich that as the Sept. 23 premiere unspools, Fitz's fate will go unaddressed 'just long enough that you think, 'Oh my God, really? Aren't they going to...?!' - before finally revealing the 411 on everyone's fave techie. But the bigger question may be: How is the lad's heart? 'The beauty of what [Fitz said to Simmons trapped underwater] is it makes for lots of complicated feelings,' Bell notes. 'I'd be curious to see how things will be different or the same now.'"
Do you think Fitz and Simmons will get together, or is there relationship strictly platonic? How, if it all, do you think Fitz will change after his near-death experience? Let us know in the comments below.
