Supernatural reaches a milestone this season with Season 10, a mark few shows reach in the modern television landscape. But the adventures of brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) have captivated a devoted fan base for a decade and kept the show alive through thick and thin.
So with Season 10 upon us, we thought we'd look ahead and offer five things we want from the upcoming run of episodes. Be warned, SPOILERS WILL FOLLOW.
1) Let Demon Dean cut loose.
Jared Padalecki has had the chance to play numerous iterations of Sam Winchester during the show's lengthy run. He had Lucifer-as-Sam aka Samifer, Soulless Sam, Crazy Sam and, most recently, Samzekiel (when Ezekiel aka Gadreel possessed him). Jensen Ackles, on the other hand, has had few opportunities to take Dean in different directions. He's played him differently in a few dream and fantasy sequences, but he's more or less had to play angry or sad.
Now, Demon Dean gives Ackles the chance to sink his teeth into a whole new persona and take his character somewhere new. He can be as crazy and as deliciously evil as he wants to be, and even his delivery will likely be different. It should be a lot of fun.
2) Give Castiel a meaningful storyline.
Castiel (Misha Collins) was a breath of fresh air when he came onto the show in Season 4, and he has remained a fan favorite ever since. But in recent seasons, the character has taken some odd turns. He developed a full-blown god complex (literally), lost his marbles, went to Purgatory, came back, lost his powers, stole grace from another angel and then went to war with Metatron.
The character's strongest work recently was his time as a human, when he struggled with the loss of his grace. This continued to affect him once he became an angel again.
But now, Cas is slowly dying as the grace inside him is burning out. So the show will either find a way to keep him around or they'll actually kill him. Either way, this should be a meaningful storyline for everyone's favorite angel.
3) Fewer filler episodes.
Ten seasons into this show, it's just hard to get invested in the "Monster of the Week" stories anymore. Back in the first few seasons, we'd entertain the thought that a Wendigo could rip Sam or Dean apart, or that a werewolf might bite one of them. Now, they've survived events on an apocalyptic scale. If Dean or Sam goes up against a shapeshifter, then that shapeshifter is toast. There's no danger to keep the fans interested.
Now obviously it's a tall task for Supernatural to create 22 episodes heavy on mythology, but it would serve the show better if they could eliminate some of the filler. This is not to say all the filler episodes are poor; in fact, some of them are downright entertaining and even significant at times. But less is more in this case.
4) Make the 200th episode rock.
All we know about the series' milestone 200th episode is that it's "musical-ish," according to showrunner Jeremy Carver at the Comic-Con 2014 panel. We also know it has something to do with Chuck's books.
A musical episode is a risky proposition for a show, especially one such as Supernatural. Buffy The Vampire Slayer pulled it off extremely well under Joss Whedon's guidance, so it's not impossible for Supernatural to do the same. We know "Carry on Wayward Son," the show's unofficial theme song, will appear in the episode, so here's hoping for plenty of classic rock tracks to harken back to the show's roots.
5) Bring back as many guest stars as possible.
The joke about Supernatural is that death has no consequence on the series. In fact, Padalecki joked at the Comic-Con panel that an actor is more likely to come back after his or her character dies. So with that in mind let's bring back as many guest stars as we can. The 200th episode is supposedly chock full of them (or at least with references to them), so that's a good start.
Most importantly, bring back Bobby. We miss Bobby. We miss Jim Beaver. We want to see that hat and that beard and hear the word "idjit" one more time.
