Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) of AMC's The Walking Dead does not appear in Robert Kirkman's comic book. But Reedus' charismatic performance and Daryl's badass attitude quickly made the character a fan favorite in the show's four seasons.
Fans don't know much about Daryl's inner workings outside of his relationship with his brother, Merle (Michael Rooker). But some fans of The Walking Dead have theorized that Daryl might be homosexual. He had something of a spark with Carol (Melissa McBride) and even Beth (Emily Kinney), though the latter is likely more of a brother-sister relationship.
In the latest issue of The Walking Dead comic book (via ComicBook.com), Kirkman addressed the theory that Daryl is gay. "All I can say is that it's been discussed," he wrote. "We have very specific ideas about Daryl's sexuality (or the seeming lack thereof), and if there's ever a quiet period in the show where he's not consistently distracted by crossbowing...we'll tackle it in the show." He also said AMC "absolutely would" let the show go through with such a character change.
This would be an extremely interesting layer to Daryl's character and would actually make a lot of sense given the way Merle raised him. Love and sex have not been major elements on The Walking Dead (at least not the TV show), but this would certainly be a bold direction for Kirkman, Scott Gimple and the rest to take.
