PBS Masterpiece released the first official stills from the upcoming fifth season from the award-winning drama, Downton Abbey. Unfortunately, there is a major gaffe in one of the cast photos that has sparked an internet sensation.
As we mentioned here, 8 production photos were posted on their Facebook wall. Amongst the cast photos, we see child newcomers Fifi Hart as Sybbie, twins Zac and Oliver Barker as George, and Richard E. Grant as Simon Bricker. This also marks the first time Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville)'s dog appears in the group photo.
In the cast photo, Earl of Grantham (Bonneville), and his daughter, Lady Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) are standing in front of their grand mantelpiece at the wealthy manor. Remember folks, this is supposed to be a period drama; meaning no cell phones, no internet, absolutely nothing from the modern age. Can someone explain to me why there is a plastic bottle standing on the mantel?
Wouldn't this type of show have someone checking continuity? Did some P.A. forget to throw out their water bottle after gulping the last drop? For whatever reason, the bottle stands there, taking viewers away from its period setting.
According to People, the U.K. network, ITV, and PBS, have yanked the photo from social media and its press site. They weren't though able to prevent observant onlookers from picking out the mistake.
Downton Abbey's Season 5 will run from January 4 to March 1 2015 on PBS Masterpiece. Readers, what did you think of the gaffe in the photo?
