The first Super Sunday of the 2014/2015 Premier League season has finished, and the EPL's first and second teams from last season got off to a winning start. Liverpool welcomed Southampton, whilst Manchester City took their title-winning squad to Newcastle United. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge ensured Liverpool got the 2-1 victory, whilst goals from David Silva and Sergio Aguero ensured Manchester City beat the impressive Newcastle. After their opening day wins, how far can they go this season?
Liverpool struggled at times against the Saints, but Sterling and Sturridge combined well, and were causing trouble throughout. The pair look to develop together every week, and that's a good thing for both Liverpool and England. Southampton looked a decent team, despite selling many of their best first-team players.
Manchester City were sluggish, with Newcastle playing very well, but the champions took their chances, while Newcastle didn't, resulting in a scoreline that by no means reflected the style of play that was on show from both teams. The Toon will take great pride in knowing they can bounce back and win their next games, while Man City will breathe a huge sigh of relief.
Can either Liverpool or City win the title? How far will Newcastle and the Saints go this season? It's going to be a long, hard season, but if the first Super Sunday was anything to go by, football fans are in for some cracking entertainment in the 2014/15 Premier League season.
Liverpool 2-1 Southampton
Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City
