After pop star Madonna walked off stage at the famous Paris concert venue l'Olympia Thursday night after only playing a 45-minute set, fans reacted by rioting outside the streets of the theater and vehemently chanting, "remboursez! remboursez!" which blatantly means "Give us our money back!" in French.
Fans had a right to be angry, considering many of them slept on the streets outside the venue Wednesday night to be there when doors opened on Thursday. Tickets were only offered to loyal members of Madonna's official fan club, and ran from 80 to over 280 euros (for those of you not familiar with European currency, one euro is worth approximately 1.2316 U.S. dollars). Madonna headed out on L'Olympia stage at around 10:15 p.m., and took off at approximately 11 p.m.
Once Madonna disappeared offstage, fans remained in their seats and began to boo, also shouting out insults including "salope," the French word meaning "slut." Concert-goers then took to the streets to voice their disapproval.
Fans also responded angrily on Twitter (many in French) following the gypped set, including the Tweets:
"280€ for a seat + 10 minutes of a speech + 40 minutes of a show + 2 days of camping in front of the #Olympa = #Madonna #MDNA #Paris #thatsucks"
"How much does it cost to see Madonna at l'Olympia? It's 6.3 euros per minute!"
"Material Girl" enthusiasts aren't the only ones currently angry with Madonna in France. At a July 14 concert at the Stade de France, Madonna played a video during her set which featured an image of French right-wing politician Marine Le Pen's face with a swastika emblazoned on it. Le Pen is currently pressing charges against the "Like a Virgin" star.
Before ending her less than one hour set in Paris on Thursday, Madonna spoke to the crowd about the Le Pen ordeal and stated, "I know that I made a certain Marine Le Pen very angry with me. And it's not my intention to make enemies; it's my intention to promote tolerance."
If things go as planned in France (without any more controversies) Madonna is set to play in Nice, France on August 21.
