VMAs: Katy Perry Channels Britney Spears In Denim Dress- Who Wore It Better?

Katy Perry sure knows how to pay homage to her idols. The "Dark Horse" beauty channeled Britney Spears in her outfit for the 2014 Video Music Award last night. Perry wore a custom made denim Versace Couture dress that she wore in honor of the outfit Ms. Spears wore to the 2001 American Music Awards.

The infamous outfit that Brit wore to the award show back in 2001 has gone down in history as one of the singer's most iconic looks. Whether you think its hideous or amazing, there is no denying that her outfit had staying power, as it has made its reappearance 13 years later on Katy Perry.

Britney coordinated her '01 denim dress with her then boyfriend Justin Timberlake who also wore denim but in the form of a jacket and a top hat. To emulate the famous couple, Katy enlisted the help of her "This Is How We Do" remix partner Riff Raff to pull off Timberlake's early 2000's look.

The idea for the outfit was born when Katy replied to a tweet of Britney doing an impression of Woody Woodpecker on Twitter. Katy retweeted the video, adding, "This is the best thing I've seen all day bb."

Spears, in Ice Bucket Challenge fun, nominated Katy to do her best impression saying she had 24 hours to complete it.

"@katyperry You're up next. #Noexcuses. You have 24 hours to do your best impression."

Well it seems like she pulled off her impression seamlessly. Well maybe not seamlessly because we can still see some in that dress... but you know what we mean.

Before the red carpet, Katy tweeted, "I must admit my outfit is a result of my love for nostalgia and my Tumblr addiction #THISISHOWWEDOVMAS."

She then tweeted over to Brit hoping her impression could live up to Spears, writing, "@Britneyspears I did my best impression, hope u likey!"

Spears couldn't be at the VMA's as she was performing in Las Vegas but made sure to tweeted Katy about her love for the outfit. "@Katyperry Just when I thought the denim dress has retired... you bring it back! You looked amazing tonight bb ;)"

According to E! News, Brit still has the original dress in her closet.
