While the New York Giants took home their victory against New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, a lot of commotion was going on behind-the-scenes. Jets cornerback Dimitri Patterson had a difficult time explaining why he was AWOL during those 48 hours.
According to ESPN, the missing athlete was a no-show during Friday night's game, even though he attended meetings, a walk-through and a pregame meal. Coach Rex Ryan said he was hoping to use him but he never showed up for the game. The team exhausted their efforts trying to reach him, but the player didn't even return their voicemail messages.
On the official Jets Twitter account, General Manager John Idzik tweets, "Patterson will be suspended indefinitely, and that will allow us to gather more information to what led to his behavior."
The hasty suspension could be the result of the Jets' 35-24 loss to the Giants. If the team had won, maybe the consequences wouldn't have been so big. There has been speculation that the football player was growing frustrated with his previous injuries. Maybe his medication caused him to miss those hours?
Patterson tells his side to the story to USA Today, "The reports about me going AWOL are totally false. I have my reason for missing those days. I'm not going to go into specifics, but I've discussed those reasons with the people I need to discuss them with." The cornerback continues to explain, "But as far as going AWOL, no, that's totally false."
Starting corners Darrin Walls and Ellis Lankster will be filling in during his suspension.
