Just how many "Call me Maybe" video parodies will be made before the Carly Rae Jepsen pop hit finally gets old? Apparently a lot, because the hilarious crew at The NOC has provided us with yet another clever rendition, this one centered on the heated (yet innocent) rivalry between Olympic U.S. swimmers Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
At first it seemed Lochte had the friendly competition on lock, winning gold in the 400-IM while Phelps came in at a surprising and rather disappointing fourth place. But during Sunday night's 400-meter freestyle relay, Phelps switched things up by putting up the fastest time of the four-member U.S. team, finishing 100 meters in just 47.15 seconds. With a one-second lead over his competitors when Lochte jumped in the pool to cover the last lap, he failed to step up in the last 50 meters and was defeated by France's Yannick Agnel. The French snatched the gold while U.S. accepted silver (a rather big upset).
So it wouldn't be stretching it to say that both Phelps and Lochte probably aren't too happy with the results, although both men kept it clean for the cameras:
"I was just really excited and I think I over-swam the first 50 and it hurt me for the last 50," Lochte said. "But we were able to get a medal, so I guess that's good."
Phelps followed up with, "It's tough... We were the ones that the coaches thought were going to have the best shot. We went out there and raced. That's all you can ask."
And now a perfect lead-up to introduce the "Call me Maybe" parody, entitled "Call me Lochte."
Poking fun at past Phelps exploits, including his marketing partnership with the fast-food tycoon Subway and the controversy surrounding a 2009 photo of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe, the actor in the video goes on to sing what it must feel like to be inside Lochte's head (okay, some of these thoughts are obviously a little overdramatic and absurd, but it's still funny to think about). Some hilarious lines include:
"I'm in a personal hell/ I kind of hate Michael Phelps/I wish he'd drown in a well/ That dude is in my way."
And:
"You were my idol/Now you're just a rival/Don't get suicidal/Where you think you're swimming, Mikey?"
The catchy chorus is replaced with the statement, "But this is my year/So call me Lochte."
Whether on Team Phelps or Team Lochte, this video is still sure to entertain and provide for a few good laughs.
Watch the video, which includes lyrics, above, and be sure to check out another "Call me Maybe" parody featuring more U.S. olympic swimmers here.
