'Banksy Does New York' HBO Documentary [VIDEO] Infamous Street Artist Lands Special About NYC Takeover

Last year, the mysterious, world-renowned graffiti artist Banksy took over New York City, claiming residence in the Big Apple and producing a new piece of art every day for a month. Despite the great works of art being produced, the city and its citizens went crazy for the anonymous Oscar-nominated artist. Now HBO is producing a special documentary entitled Banksy Does New York, which will go deeper into 2013's events, detailing what exactly happened and why NYC fell for Banksy.

"From the moment Banksy took over the streets, New Yorkers became obsessed," president of HBO documentaries, Shelia Nevens, said. The film captures this month of madness created by user-generated footage."

Filmmaker Chris Moukarbel has reportedly crowd-sourced the footage being used in the Banksy documentary, making this project truly about the reaction to the artist and his work rather than focusing on Banksy, who probably won't get too involved with the HBO special.

"I crowd-sourced footage that New Yorkers posted online each day of the month. It was about a city holding a mirror back up to the artist."

Much like this documentary and its crowd-sourcing techniques, Banksy announced his "residency" through his Instagram account and with the trending hashtag "#BANKSYNYC."
