FX delivers another terrifying episode of The Strain and ups the death count in 'Creatures of the Night.' Just like in Dark Horse Comics adaptation, two pivotal characters played by Corey Stoll and Kevin Durand are about to meet in Guillermo Del Toro's nail-biting vampire drama.
Previously, Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll) wounded Thomas Elchorst (Richard Sammel) in the leg. The silver bullet causes Thomas to walk funny as he tries to exit the subway tunnels. Eph and his group have just gotten the the attention of The Master and he will strike back.
Eph, Nora (Mia Maestro), Jim (Sean Astin), and Abraham (David Bradley) end up at a medical supply store. After the window is shattered, the group wonders why an alarm hasn't rung. Turns out Vasily Fett (Durand) already broken in and he is pointing a gun at the back of Eph's head.
In the standoff, they argue who gets the stolen items. Ultraviolet radiation is the only thing that can kill the vampires quickly. Nora settles the deal and they each get a pair of 6. Half of the group ends up at a local gas station, where they unexpectedly end up meeting the hacker Dutch Valders, who stopped the network.
All of a sudden, the gas station is swarming with bloodsuckers. Abraham fights off a few of them off, with his sword and nail gun. Even though Vasiliy jumps in, the vamps end up snacking on a few victims (including guest appearance by celebrated make-up artist Rick Baker).
As the group retreats to the gas station, Jim gets stung by one of the infected. Eph operates on Jim's face, using tweezers to get the white worm out of him. After Jim's cut is stitched up, the vampires shut off the electricity in the gas station.
It turns out the battery inside the UV lights will only last twenty minutes. They need to somehow get the bread truck and steal the dead driver's keys. Soon everyone is gathering supplies, emptying plastic bottles, and loading up on lighter fluid.
All of a sudden, Eph discovers another worm crawling around inside Jim's face. As he turned around, they discover the white worms have multiplied in his back. As they debate what to do, Abraham reveals that when Jim turns, he will go after everyone he loves.
As the argument tenses up, Vasiliy grabs Eph's gun and shoots Jim in the head. Driven to tears, Nora mentions it was not his decision to make. The group doesn't even have time to mourn for their dead friend as the vampires come crashing down through the roof.
While Vasiliy throws molotov cocktails to build a fire and fills in buckets with gasoline, Eph kills the infected driver to get to his keys. Once they all get inside, the group drives away in the truck as the gas station explodes.
In The Strain, Eph gains a new member of the group but loses Jim in the process. Readers, what did you think of 'Creatures of the Night?'
