Try something: close your eyes and think of the movie Wayne's World. What comes to mind? After the horrible wigs and ridiculous (but hilarious) storyline, probably that famous "Bohemian Rhapsody" scene, right? Well, how would you feel if it never happened? I know ... the very thought is appalling!
Well, it turns out that the fan-favored scene almost didn't happen. And because of that, the film's star, Mike Myers, nearly walked away from the project altogether, according to Vanity Fair.
The former Saturday Night Live player and Austin Powers creator recently sat down with comedian Marc Maron for an episode of WTF with Marc Maron. During his interview, the comic announced how much he had to fight to keep the famed Queen tune in the film.
Myers has been known to be rather difficult to work with, but in this case, he claims he doesn't mind it because, as it turns out, he was 100 percent correct. He told Maron, "An example of something I fought very, very hard for, and it was for it was my first movie: It was "Bohemian Rhapsody" in Wayne's World. They wanted Guns N' Roses. Guns N' Roses were very, very popular. They were a fantastic band. ...
Queen, at that point, not by me and not by hardcore fans, but the public had sort of forgotten about them. Freddie [Mercury] had gotten sick, the last time we had seen them was on Live Aid and then there were a few albums after where they were sort of straying away from their arena-rock roots. But I always loved "Bohemian Rhapsody." I thought it was a masterpiece. So I fought really, really hard for it. and at one point I said, 'Well, I'm out. I don't want to make this movie if it's not "Bohemian Rhapsody."'"
Obviously, the comedian won both the fight and the war. And when all was said and done, our guess is the ones arguing for Guns N' Roses were rather pleased as well.
