According to the legendary Sir Paul McCartney and fellow Opening Ceremony musical performers, the low pay doesn't even factor in to the overall surreal experience of performing at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.
Organizers of the Opening Ceremony have reported that popular musicians including McCartney, the indie rock band Arctic Monkeys, UK rapper Dizzee Rascal, singer Emeli Sande, and rocker Mike Oldfield were paid as little as £1 (approximately $1.57 U.S. dollars) for their performances at Friday night's spectacle.
But there is a catch - these stars were not expecting to get paid for their services at all. According to the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LCOG), the musicians originally agreed to perform for free. The thousands of other performers in the ceremony were given a professional wage for their work, but the headliners were not hearing it. The $1.57 payment arises from the fact that since the performance contracts were legally binding, the organizers were required to offer up a nominal fee. (How this worked out is each musician was paid less than 1/20th of the cost of the cheapest ticket for the ceremony. Tickets for the event ranged from £20-£2012).
But money was shockingly not an issue this time around, since all the mega-stars were just happy to have taken part in the experience:
"I got paid £1 for my work...I signed the contract myself. Mind you, I haven't received anything yet! When I do, though, that £1 will be truly special," songstress Sande reported to the London Evening Standard.
In the same article former Beatles front man McCartney insisted "it was a great opening ceremony."
And UK rap sensation Dizzee Rascal, who performed his hit song "Scream," seems to think it was a miracle for him to even be there, stating, ""The energy in the stadium was unreal. These opportunities only come by once in a lifetime and to be part of it was an unforgettable experience."
The show (entitled "Isles of Wonder") was composed by the director of "Slumdog Millionaire" Danny Boyle.
