Succumbing to a an internet campaign promoted on Facebook earlier this month, the rapper Pitbull (Armando Christian Perez), promised to visit the Walmart that got the most "like" hits on the multinational retailer corporation's Facebook page.
And the winner is... Kodiak, Alaska?
That's right, the Kodiak Walmart (a city located in the Kodiak Island Borough of Alaska with a population of 6,130 as of the 2010 census), has prevailed.
Of course not without a little help from the comedic master plan cooked up by Boston writer David Thorpe. Thorpe thought it would be entertaining to "exile" Pitbull to the most remote Walmart possible. He succeeded, with the Kodiak Walmart receiving over 65,000 "likes" as of Tuesday.
Pitbull left his stomping grounds of Miami, FL and recieived a warm (well, cold) welcome in Kodiak on Monday (July 30). Thorpe, who writes for the Boston Phoenix, also flew out to Kodiak on Monday and met the "Mr. Worldwide" star himself.
Upon his arrival, the Kodiak community offered Pitbull a "survival kit" care package that included key items Pitbull would need to survive the Alaskan wilderness. Among such items was a bear spray repellent and a bear bell, things Alaskan hikers use to make noise in order to ward off any wondering bears.
Pitbull spent the day with the locals and played an intimate show at the local Coast Guard base, which was attended by about 250 people. He posted pictures from his Alaskan adventure on his twitter and tweeted Monday night:
@Pitbull: "Thank U Kodiak ... I am honored, truly."
