Drew Barrymore Opens Up On How Motherhood Changed Her Life

Actress Drew Barrymore chats with Working Mother about her recent film with Adam Sandler and how being a mother of two has changed her for the better.

The Golden Globe and SAG Award-wining actress co-starred in her third film with funnyman Adam Sandler. The movie Blended, which will be released on DVD this month, sparks many questions. Working Mother asked the actress if there was anything special about working on this particular film with Sandler.

"We wanted it to be about family because that's where the focus in our lives is now. It was more emotional this time." Her last two films she shot with him were 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer, which were solely based on atypical single life situations. "When children are involved, your thinking and perspectives are so different from when you're single and your thoughts revolve so much more around your own interests."

She tells WM that her and Sandler have talks about their children and how much time you need to basically be a parent and give your child what they need.

The actress explains that mother hood is emotional. "So many emotions take over. I'm trying to avoid being the kind of anxious mother who always wants things to be perfect," she states. "I want them to be happy and grow up with security and stability, something I didn't have."

Barrymore endured a notoriously troubled childhood. Smoking cigarettes at the age of nine and being a regular at Studio 54 led to cocaine use at age thirteen and then rehab at the age of 14. The star later came out with an autobiography titled Little Girl Lost, where she described this time of her life.

With that in mind, her life since she was a kid has changed immensely. Her two young children, Olive, 2, and Frankie, 6 months have given her a different viewpoint on life.

"Most of my life I've just worked," Barrymore said. "I didn't know how to have a life under those circumstances. Now that I've carved out a little more time for myself, I find that the passion and the interest and the discussion [about life] are much more in the center."
