A September thriller is something moviegoers must have needed as No Good Deed opened in theaters this weekend. An impressive $24.5 million the film pushed ahead of long-standing box office veterans Guardians of the Galaxy.
The dark thriller staring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson had great promotional backers according to Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak senior box office analyst. "No Good Deed represented brand-new entertainment with the perfect release date, two big stars and a great social-media marketing campaign. It came on strong Friday and never let up."
The Screen Gems movie was predicted by its counterparts at Sony of coming out on top this weekend, and their prediction have seem to became reality. "We really felt we were going to win. We felt we were in the zone and had a film that people were really going to like," Rory Bruer, Sony's president of worldwide distribution, told Entertainment Weekly. "We were always very high on the film and felt that it would really work. When you put all the elements together - great casing with Idris and Taraji, and this very, very suspenseful, taunt thriller that Sam Miller delivered - it worked really well."

Guardians of the Galaxy came in at 3rd place with $8 million; it had been top in the box-office for four of its six weekend releases. "Guardians has completely dominated and it continues to be a runaway blockbuster hit," says Dergarabedian. "But it's finally getting pushed down the chart."
The movie that was a big hit with families was Dolphin Tale 2 starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr., which took in $16 millions.
"Kids are back in school but they still need to go to the theater and have fun," said Dergarabedian.
